Alley Cats win Statewide Recognition

The Main Street Altus Alley Cats program received top honors this week winning first place in the Nonprofit Category for Beautification and Landscaping in the Keep Oklahoma Beautiful 2005 statewide Environmental Excellence Competition.

“We are so excited to receive this award.  This program’s success was dependent on so many different people – the airmen from the 54th Air Refueling Squadron, the Boy Scouts, the City, the Main Street Board and the community who all came out to help keep our alleys in downtown clean,” said Lindsey Galloway, Main Street Altus director.

The Alley Cats Program kicked off this past spring with the Great American Cleanup, where volunteers spent a Saturday morning picking up two tons of trash from the downtown alleys.  Since the April kickoff, Alley Cats has continued to maintain the alleys with monthly cleanups held the third Saturday of each month. Doris and Don Jouett of Confectionately Yours have begun providing complimentary drinks to all the Alley Cats following the regular cleanups.

Main Street Altus will be honored at the Keep Oklahoma Beautiful 15th Annual Awards Recognition Banquet held November 16.  The banquet follows the KOB Annual Environmental Conference where Galloway and Main Street Design Chair Barbara Burleson, who conceived the idea of Alley Cats, have been asked to speak about the Alley Cats Program to community leaders from around the state.

“We really feel that alleys are a direct reflection of the community.  Clean, maintained alleys tell people passing through town that the citizens of Altus care about our community.  We hope this program will carry into other communities throughout the state,” said Galloway.

Being a first place winner also puts Main Street Altus in the running for this year’s Outstanding Achievement Award which will be announced at the banquet that evening.

“I have been amazed at the response to this program.  There has not been a cleanup yet where I haven’t heard someone mention how much fun they had,” said Galloway. “When we started this program, fun wasn’t necessarily a word I was expected people to associate with cleaning up dirty alleys on a monthly basis but I’m thrilled people enjoy doing it and continue to come out and help.”

Fresh Paint day in Altus!!

Keep Oklahoma Beautiful kicked off this pilot program in five communities this year including Altus.  Together with their sponsors, HIS Paint and Public Service Corporation of Oklahoma, provided each pilot community with 20 gallons of free paint and a small budget for suppplies.

Here's the challenge Main Street Altus faced!!

Special Thank to the men and women from the 54th ARS and Altus Air Force Base for all their help!! Also a HUGE thanks goes out to Holmes Willis for his time and dedication to the project, to Randy Marple and the Parks Dept. for so graciously lending us their equipment and knowledge and to the City of Altus for their support.  We couldn't get the job finished without your support!!!
